I have seen Spit Wheel studs break off and it isn't a pretty site.  
Fortunately, when it happened to My former boss (Emmett
Whittington) at The Speedway at College Station Texas sometime in the late 
60's, the wheel stayed inside the fender well.  Otherwise it
would have been catastrophic.  He was at the top of a high banked curve when it 
happened.
