My little trick to this is like Joe said, 
Take an open end wrench bigger than the joint, shove it in, and then add a
screwdriver and pull on it. 
Tighten down on the nut.

I found this out when I tried to extract the ball joints on my 71 Spit.
It's the same thing just backwards.

Rob,
The trick is to use a large screwdriver or some other device to force the
pieces apart while tightening the nut.  That makes the ball
try to rub against the joint until the nut is tight enough to prevent it
from spinning on its own.
