Someone also suggested velcro, which is what I'm probably going to use.

The carpet kit I purchased also had the snaps, and, like you, nothing on the
floor boards. Rather than drill holes to install the snaps, I used
double-sided tape to keep the carpet in place. Works great, allows easy
removal, and no holes drilled in the floorboard.
