With similiar symptoms, my problem was bad teeth on the starter
jamming on the flywheel.  You can test this by trying to turn over
the engine by hand.  If it won't turn freely, this could be the
problem.  Putting the car in 4 gear and pushing it usually
will pop the starter free.

Ignition light of course unrelated in this scenario.
