And the answer iiiiiissssssss

bleed the clutch until it hurts.

I pulled the transmission and motor out of the car to be sure I had put
everything together correctly and I had.

So I put it back and bled and bled and bled.

Finally, after many bleedings, the clutch releases.

Thanks all for the help.

----------
I've just put in my newly rebuilt (mostly) 73 motor into my 77 Spitfire.
I put in a new clutch kit. I ordered the one that works for the 75-80
models, because it has to match up to a 77 propeller shaft. In 73, the
propeller shaft had 10 splines; the 77 has twenty.

When I pressed the clutch pedal, the clutch does not disengage. I can see
the release arm move forward, so I don't think this is a hydraulic problem.

I took the motor and transmission out and removed the clutch assembly.

I did not have the clutch plate in backwards. There was grease on the
spring splines, so I believe that the release bearing was pressing against
them.

Does anyone know what else the problem might be?

Thanks.
