GT6 rotoflex rear shock question

My copy of the dealer training manual for the GT6+ rear suspension shows 
a lever shock in the exploded drawing.  Certainly they didn't come that 
way.  Does anyone know anything about the history of the rotoflex and if 
really and truly it was originally designed for a lever shock?  Just 
curious about it.  

It would explain the cheesy way Triumph mounted the shock on the 
rotoflex rear end.
