If the radiator is efficiently transferring heat, the upper hose will be
significantly hotter then the lower hose. If there is just a slight
difference between temperatures, heat is not being transferred.
That will tell you how the radiator is doing at transferring heat, and
what your decision regarding radiator work should be. Probably your
radiator is less then wonderfull, considering its age. It doesn't take
much buildup to reduce heat transfer.
Now, do you know for sure the water pump is working well adequately
circulating the water? Do you know for sure your thermostat is opening
fully, promptly, and at the correct temperature? Have you actually
checked the temperature of the water coming out of the engine to see if
it is as hot as the gauge is aluding to?

Hello spitted ones,
I'm testing the 67 Spit. The engine is running too hot for my liking,
and this in rather cool weather of 45 F. here in Ontario. The temp.
gauge is hanging between the 3/4 and the red setting, with the
temperature increasing when I'm driving at 4500 rpm.
