Peter,
I would suspect a poor connection somewhere between the battery and the
starter. With the amount of current drawn by the starter, even a slight
resistance at a connection can result in a SERIOUS voltage drop. Check,
dismantle, and clean every connection.
I had a poor contact on the positive lead of my battery for a while. It
would behave like the battery was totally flat, yet I just wiggled the
connector a few times and the car would spring to life. The next time I
started I might have the same problem, or it might be fine.
