Thanks to everyone for the help. Turned out to be a much simpler install
than expected, as it seems the previous owner had at one point put a cat on
to pass inspection and then removed and replaced it with a section of flex
pipe. So we just removed that and, with some fiddling, got the new cat in
without too much difficulty.
Whoever mentioned about the limited ground clearance- you weren't kidding!
Yikes! He's going to have some problems if he leaves that on permanently.
The combination of the cat, under inflated tires, possibly weak springs in
the suspension and him being 6'4" and 240 lbs makes for not a lot of
clearance. Maybe an inch? :-)
Fortunately, I think it will be coming back off once its inspected.
One of these days I'm hoping to get my friend on the list. Its a great
resource and would help him a lot. Smart guy and mechanically inclined, but
never spent much time around cars.

So my question is, where to mount the cat? Closer to the header or muffler
or in the middle? Any particular place better in terms of heat transfer
into the passenger compartment or fire hazard? Should we also fashion and
