Yes, you can grind down the clamps to adjust for the different
thicknesses.  In fact, I think I may have had to do that on mine, but I
don't remember.  I would suggest doing it in such a way as to duplicate
the ball on the end of the clamp that contacts the flange.  If you grind
it flat you'll likely encounter some binding problems across the edge of
the flange.

Do get someone to do some spraying for you to see if you truly are
seated flush.  It took me a while to discover that I had an interference
problem hiding in the center, right where I really couldn't see it.  The
manifold would pull down tight against that interference, feeling for
all the world like it was properly mounted.
