Hmm, everyone seems to have a different reason why the Spit rear axle is
weak. For me it was the UJs - I've had three fail on me when driving, and
it really is not funny when that happens (70mph, one rear wheel flapping
around all over the place, limited directional control!). The first two
times I had warning for a couple of days that the UJ was on the way out, so
on the second occasion at least I SHOULD have heeded the warning and not
driven the car until it was fixed. The third time there was no warning, but
at least I was just pulling away from a junction so not travelling at any
speed. Tell-tale sign is a single 'clunk' from the rear when pulling away
from a standstill, or changing up or down a gear, or moving between
accelerating and lifting off.
