Doug,

I recently had speedo problems myself. Two different ones that occurred in
rapid succession. The first was that the casing for dimmer light broke off.
I took out the speedometer took the speedometer apart and fixed that with
some glue - one of the plastic pieces had got it self into the
sprockets/gears of the speedo. Then about a week later the speedo stopped
working all of a sudden. The internal cable had snapped (the symptoms were
that my odometer and speedometer both stopped at the same time - so the fact
that your odometer quit but you are getting wonky speedo readings may mean
the cable is not broken, but not engaging properly).

If it was me I would disconnect the speedo cable - assuming your dexterity
and space via the drivers side glove box allows - from the speedo (without
removing the speedo) and then inspect (i.e. does there appear to be enough
of the cable exposed to engage the speedo properly, go for a short drive and
see if the internal cable is actually turning - don't get into an accident
doing this :)).

I would avoid pulling the speedo (if at all possible), because it can be a
drag taking it out and putting it in (just my opinion). However, if you
don't have the dexterity, space, or if the bolt (grommet??) holding the
cable to the speedo is too stiff you may end up having to pull it.

Good luck,

Jim Cullen
