This is a small bearing 1296 engine that is now equipped with a Lucas
Alternator. I have long suspected that the smaller pulley that was designed
for use with the original generator is spinning the alternator slower than it
wants and therefore not putting out the kind of charge that it normally
would.

I have a 1296 small journal from my first 68 Spitfire in my 74 Spitfire.
When I did the install, I used the Lucas alternator from the 1500 I took out.
I was getting slow blinkers, ignition trouble and dying battery for many
years.
I finally installed a Delco alternator using the core from a 1979 Camaro I
own.
The Delco solved everything.
Fast blinker, bright lights, yahoo!

I have not compared the pulley size to the Lucas, but it works great.
It is a bit larger, but I have plenty of room.
Photos and words here of the swap.
