I am under the impression that those things faded as they aged, turning  them
to what appears to be a gold color.

I have heard of that theory too but I don't know, it would seem to be odd  to 
me that a badge would fade to gold from silver & black.  The silver  also 
looks like part of the stock the badge is made from as it is embossed then  
printed black.  Now the gold ones are just embossed gold stock.  As  indicated 
I 
have both and they are both old and appear to be original.  Not  sure it the 
different numbers on the back mean anything.
