Ulix, thanks for the thoughts on grease. My U joints also are of the sealed type. There is a VW site (The Sermons of Bob Hoover at http://www.type2.com/sermons/index.html) in which it is advocated to use a syringe to inject grease into sealed balljoints. His stuff is worth a read.
