Thank you to all those who provided advice --- as suggested the problem was
the mixture. Just in case anyone else has the same problem:

Most responses from the list indicated that the problem was a result of the
free flow of air through the K&N. I also consulted the dealer from whom I
bought the K&N--- always helps to buy from your local friendly British car
garage. They indicated the the only solution was to customize the needle.
This process varied from 1 to 3 hours of work: drive the car, pull the
needle and retool it, drive the car and repeat process until it runs
properly. Rather than this process I pulled the entire top assembly from an
old Zenith Carb I happened to have, one with a K&N type cleaner already
attached. Putting this assembly on the existing carb resolved the problem -
I assume some one else either customized the needle or bought the right one
for the cleaner...
