  Looks like Mini-Mania did it by lengthening the bottom part of the
shifter instead of shortening the top part; then adding a thick spacer
at the ball joint.
  There -might- be some kinda angularity advantage there; but it looks
like it's mostly useful for folks with small diameter steering wheels
and serious competition cars. This because you wouldn't have to move your
hand as far from the steering wheel to reach the shifter as you would
if you shortened the top of the shifter.
  For the average street car, Frank's shortening/rethreading the top
of the shifter is probably much more cost effective.
