I did this about a year and a half ago in my '77 Midget.  I got all new brake 
hardware.  There was NO WAY I could get the new clips on, and it seemed that 
they were too wide to fit next to whatever they were hitting.  (Memory is 
fading...)

What I did was I ground off the edge opposite the opening just a tad so they 
fit where they were supposed to go.  I didn't take off too much so they are 
still strong.  The old clips that I removed were also ground down this way, 
but a lot more was taken off than I dared to remove, and they were very weak. 
 I did not want to reuse them.

They have held for a year of autocrossing!
