Our bugeye has a similar mark on the  bonnet.  According to the hot rod guy, 
it is a mill mark from the steel manufacturer.  Ours is pentagonal and has 
the griffin and the date.  It is the same on both sides of the metal.  Don't 
know what the rest of the numbers mean.  The mark is stamped onto, not into 
the steel.
