Too far advanced timing will cause the starter to kick out.
A bad ring gear will cause similar symptoms.
A weak bendix spring too.
Or just a dry dirty bendix drive.
I have found that if it spins, it's usually OK.
Clean and oil the bendix. this is the first rule on using parts
starters.
