Am I missing something here. We have a guy, that David says is a good
friend, with a car that he bought for next to nothing, who wants to "fix it
up" for next to nothing with the second hand help of a group of people that
he doesn't want to get directly involved with. However, he is willing to
take advantage of the group through David to either spark interest or garner
sympathy--I haven't figured out which.

Note to David's friend--get involved first hand with the list or with someone
knowledgeable, or have David offer the car for sale for what you paid for it.
There are plenty of people who are willing to make the judgement call as to
whether it's restorable or not, but you are carrying "we cheep" 'way too far
and taking unfair advantage of your friend and his contacts. If you continue
to try to patch together a pile of junk, spending as little money as possible
you'll almost certainly end up with a pile of junk. If there is no joy is
making it run well or maintaining it, you will never enjoy owning an LBC.
Sorry about the harsh words, but it's better you know now than later, and I
am getting the feeling that you are simply wasting our time and your own.
