I was born and raised in Massachusetts, and in all the history books it became
obvious to me the the war was won by the North.

However, when I got drafted in the Korean conflict, I was sent to Virginia for
basic training and on my weekends I would poke around the countryside with my
wife.  It was a shock to see that the Northerners were apparently all wrong.
Clearly from all the monuments and tablets, the South won the war.  What a shock
to this Yankee!

On the other hand, maybe I took things too literally.  When I read abound 
certain
houses in New England being stops in the "underground railroad", I always wanted
to go to their basements and see the tunnels and where the tracks went!!
