that's like asking the group "cats or dogs"!  LOL!  the cable should not
need lubrication.  but  there are those who after frequent failures swear by
lubricating the cable before installation.  and then there are those who
have had trouble free operation for near "eternity" and will say it's not
needed.    my take on the whole operation is if you are using a used cable:
pull it apart, wipe down the cable and use a very light oil to lube it up a
bit.  why?  to activate any old deposits in the shielding of the cable wich
could lead to an erratic or jumping needle.   plus you get to see if there
is any fraying in the cable wich indicates you will not be using it in your
car!   if you are putting in a brand new cable then i'd say it's safe to
install it as delivered .
