How this thread got started I have no idea but since you brought it up...

I am in the A/V business and sit in hotel ballrooms "behind the curtain" on
a regular basis, running powerpoint for corporate presenters as they speak
to their audience.  Before powerpoint (in the 80s) it was multi-image
slideshows.  Same thing.  The bottom line for any of these media is that
they are "speech support", that is, they are meant to illustrate and
reinforce what the presenter is saying, and nothing more.  If using
powerpoint means "dumbing down" a presentation, it is because the presenter
is using it incorrectly, or simply doesn't know how to present.  The
information on the screen, no matter what you use to get it there, is best
used to present the headlines and main points of a topic - the presenter
fills in the details.
