I have been shooting custom MC paint jobs in a booth for a few years now for 
income and I use Valspar and House of Kolor products.  Dupont is great stuff 
too.  I would just shoot the base silver and within 12 hours (max) come back 
with the clear coat making sure that I do not mix the clear according to the 
instructions on the can.  Them instructions are there to make the EPA happy - 
you 
need to make sure that you are shooting it thinner, like near one to one or 
you have to run about 65 lbs through your gun (if left thick).  With this 
system it is best to apply the coats of clear within 12 hours.  I usually wait 
about 20 minutes for the gasses to escape and then I start in with my clear 
coats 
- each spaced about 15 to 20 minutes apart.  If you get the viscosity right 
you can get a nice flat coat with no more orange peel than you would see in a 
factory job.  If you do get a run, take a razor blade and sand off the edges so 
that you have a round sharp face.  Use that face in a perpendicular fashion to 
take down the run, of course very carefully. You can then sand the run out 
begining with 800 grit working your way up to 2000 grit and then buff out that 
particular area.  It will blend in very nicely.  Of course the goal is to try 
and excecise as much control as possible to avoid any runs.   I am doing some 
wheels and plan to lay on about 5 clear coats.  I typically shoot the last coat 
a bit extra thin with as slow reducer as possible.  This gives a nice final 
wet coat.
