Some pistons, (original Lockheed, for example) have some material
from the edge that touches the pad removed. Usually about120 degrees
or so. The rationale is that it will help to reduce brake squeal by
putting a slight bias on the pad. Very few, if any, modern
calipers or replacement pistons have that relief. It is meant to be
angled to the top of rotation. Frankly, it doesn't make a difference,
at least with modern friction.
