Unless you just installed the new style jets with the barbed hoses, it 
is NOT a push on fit.
There is a brass washer and O ring or rubber gasket between the float 
and the tube. Test for leaks by filling the bowl with a little gas or 
paint thinner.
As for sticking needles, did you center the jets?
To do this you loosen the large nut at the base of the jet, not the 
adjusting nut. Then let the piston/needle drop into the jet.
It should drop with a thunk without the spring and dashpot.
If not, twist the jet in it's sleeve and try again.
Keep doing this while you tighten the jet nut, some carbs are easy, 
others need an hour of fiddling.
