The yearly sojourn to Packer Lake in the Sierra went well. The rebuilt 1275
started out well, but began sputtering and missing as the road angled up into
the mountains. The more HP I needed, the more it sputtered. More throttle
helped a bit so I concluded that the new carb needle was too lean. When I got
to the lake, I borrowed the neighbor's tiny whetstone for sharpening fish
hooks. I laid the needle on a flat surface and stroked a flat onto the
midrange area of the needle. Test drove it to the top of the local ridge,
MUCH better. A few more strokes of the whetstone and another retry gave good
results. At 6000 feet, going uphill in third and pulling strong without miss,
perfect!! I couldn't wait to get home to check the plugs. When I did, the
color was excellent and the mileage looks to be fantastic.
If I can keep my foot off the floor for a few months, I could easily imagine
driving this version to Missouri.

Since both daughters had to leave the lake for school (one to teach, one to
learn) after just two days, the wife and I got our first taste of the "empty
nest". So far, it tasted like fresh caught trout, excellent wine, and no need
to shut the doors at night. Sweet!

Regards,
Glen Byrns
