That's not how I remember things. At the time of the CART/IRL split,
the Indy 500 was the only CART race that was sanctioned by USAC. CART
ran the entire series, USAC's primary involvement was that they
imposed stricter safety standards than CART wanted. If CART had
continued to run the Indy 500, they would have had to use a different
car for Indy than the rest of the series. CART is the one who refused
the safety rules. Tony George did what was require to keep the
greatest race in the world going.
