I can now report on what is under the plastic surround on my steering column - a crash box, nothing that comes apart. I can also report that, if you are really stupid about how you cut the plastic, you will slice your thumb. So, does anyone know how to take a '74 steering column apart? The one adjusting nut I found does not move far enough.
