The great thing about this is that McCain would have the government pay hard
cash for RESULTS, not a bottomless pit of academic research that is not
required to actually produce any results. What people don't understand is
that when the government gives a $1 million dollar grant to a university,
the university skims 40% right off the top to pay for its supposed
"overhead". In reality, it has been my experience as a university fiscal
officer that the 40% is used to pay for unrelated faculty travel (e.g. to
adopt a baby in Romania), (literally) wine and cheese parties, unrelated
faculty luxuries, and a myriad of unrelated things the university could
never get away with if they tried to use State taxpayer money.

(Now, listen for the squeals and howls of protest from an academic community
that earns well over $100,000 a year and is required (by union contract) to
teach no more than 9 hours per week for 30 weeks a year, and not required to
hold office hours for students or give any academic advising to students.)
