Sounds to me a lot like the ignition (distributor) being wired to the  
starter side of the ignition switch. As long as you are cranking, you  
have spark.  As soon as the starter circuit kicks out, spark dies.   
Have you put a tester on the circuit?  I seem to remember someone  
saying 99% of fuel problems are electrical???
