Dean Rizor was my shop teacher. I also learned how to do so many things
that I recall up to this day when working in my shop.

For one of my shop projects he allowed me to shape a surfboard based on the
idea that there was a wood stringer down the middle, nose block and tail
block made out of wood. (Enough for wood shop I guess).

The school was about 15 minutes from San Diego beaches and at the time I was
surfing in competitions.

He was also different. He would actually get away with telling the class
how that Christ died for them and how they could receive Christ as their
personal Lord and Saviour. He would draw on the black board when we were
all sitting in class illustrating a Bible tract known as the "4 Spiritual
Laws."

Often he would meet a student or two after school to lead them to Christ.

On the weekends he would invite students out to his house to go out and take
turns riding in one of his dune buggy's that he had built.

In his words, this gave him further opportunity to share Christ with his
students.

When Mr. Tadman, a history teacher had gone to the office to complain about
Rizor and his "preaching" the principle allowed Rizor to continue on as
"long as there were no complaints from any of the students or the students
parents."

Rizor was so well liked that there was never a complaint that ever got
lodged.

Very different era, to say the least.

I am simply sharing this as the discussion of shop came up - and how this
was such a different era where one could "get away" with this type of thing.
