It's a hearing loss symptom.  It's a little known fact that some people with
hearing loss hear a ringing in their ears.  Some hear a roar.  I guess some
hear something inbetween.  You, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on
your tastes ... hear Tom Waits.  ;)
