I would see what a main shaft costs from a Nissan dealer, if that is indeed
the problem, but it is a place to start to estimate costs.  At a $150 for
the core, even if you have to put a couple hundred dollars in it, it is
still less than the $500 or so they are going for on ebay.  Seals and
bearings wouldn't be too much to do too.  I don't know where Whidbey is, but
you will have shipping costs, the same for any ebay purchase.
