In the early 80's H Production 948 engines had to retain the single row timing
chain, and I learned how quickly they wore out. On the first engine I used
one for 5 races before investigating why it felt flat and ultimately found the
cam timing retarded 2-3 degrees from where we set it on the dyno. Later we
could upgrade to the double row chain which lasted longer.

As a fan of L series Datsun engine's I can attest to the fact that timing
chain stretch on a overhead cam engine will significantly affect
perfomance. Datsun had a system to easily reindex the cam to compensate
for chain stretch and doing so could easily be felt in the "seat of the
pants".
