I'm looking for an education and I know this is the place to get one!

Today my copy of "Classic Motorsport" came. I noticed a nice looking
pair of Elysee mechanical stopwatches mounted on a brushed aluminum
plate advertised on page 109 ( or see:
http://www.classiccarseats.com/watches.php ). These are a rally clock set.

I've never participated in a timed rally and only have a cursory
knowledge about the events. Timed events over a prescribed route in
which the driving team has to come as close as possible to an ideal
time for the route. Points subtracted for early / late arrivals. I
understand why having a timepiece would be handy for the team. Why
two stopwatches? How do they get used along the way to achieve the
"perfect" time for the route?

I have no interest in Elysee time pieces. They are very nice looking,
but at $495 a bit pricey for me.

So . . .educate me!
