IF it is a single stage paint designed to have the option of a clear coat as
there are some out there that are not designed for it. Iris is painted with
a single stage urethane (PPG Concept 2000) and the final coat was mixed 50%
clear and 50% color per PPG's data sheet. If the paint wasn't designed for
a clear coat you probably could still apply a clear coat provided you let
the urethane color coat dry for a month or two to allow all the solvents to
evaporate then sand it with 1000 grit or so to degloss it before the
application of the clear coat. You would be amazed at how long it takes
paint to really cure without the aid of ovens and heat lamps!! Talk to the
paint store where you are getting the paint from as they are the
professionals.
