I think the example may be invalid.
I believe that the 1500cc (Spitfire) engine has more bottom end torque than the
1275cc as such would probably be able to pull a taller gear.
On the other hand......

Hmm, the 1500 midgets from 8/77 on used a 3.73 diff and no one ever
described that engine in those terms...
