I pulled the stock 260 from my Tiger several years ago. I was told
that a late model 302 would make the car a "dream machine" and to save
the 260 for the next guy that might want my car to be an original. I
didn't protect the engine from moisture (it was stored indoors) and
upon last examination it looks like the Titanic (but without the
vegetation) Should I pitch out these rusty remains? Should I save some
bits for use with the 302 installation? Should I save it all ? Are
260s rare? It's really rusty, I doubt the crank could ever be cleaned
up again. Please help ! Tom p.s. I know I screwed up by letting it
rust

Unless one or both heads were cracked and you left the coolant in the
whole time it was stored, I can't imagine that all the internal parts
are wasted. The oil and grease that would normally be found in an
operational engine when it was put aside should have protected at
least some of the components. I would tear it down and salvage what
parts you can and sell or trade 'em. Some components, like the
timing chain cover are aluminum and shouldn't be in too bad a shape.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 260 and, based on my experience,
these are increasingly rare engines and finding parts it getting
both more difficult and more expensive, especially for OEM parts.

If you're not interested in the job, call your local Mustang or Old
Ford shop and I'm sure they'll be glad to take it off your hands.

Good luck.
