It could also (possibly) be related to the brake warning light circuit, 
as these are interconnected.

Definitely do check for oil pressure, though. The Smiths sender is not, 
perhaps, the single most reliable electrical item on a Triumph, so I 
would definitely suspect it. But a gauge will tell you much more.
