Charlie,

I feel compelled to answer, since I think I was the one who started most of the
discussion!  Your head should have a chamfer opposite the spark plug.  This
whole area is known as the 'squish area', and forces the fuel/air mixture into
the flame front generated from the plug when the piston is on the compression
stroke.
I don't know a thing about the older heads, but it sounds like your old head may
have been shaved, and the combustion chambers were never reshaped.  Either that,
or they never had the chamfer from the beginning.  If it's the latter, I think
you'll see a horsepower increase with the later type head.   
If you have any compression concerns with the new head, you should probably cc
it.
