Ross,

I completely rebuilt my TR-4 distributer last winter (should be similar).
The pin on my distributer was a split spring pin.  I would assume if you
have to destroy you're old pin to remove it that a split spring pin could
replace it.  Actually, since my car is older then your's (1961) I am
surpirsed that you too don't have a split spring pin as original.  Hope this
helps.
