This is the case.  I have contacted Castrol directly, and found that
they only supply GL-4 in 5 gallon pails.  TRF essentially takes and
re-packages the GL-4 out of the 5 gallon pails.  (Talk about a messy,
smelly job!)

I would make very sure to run a gear oil that is clearly deemed to
be OK by the manufacturer.  (I switched my tranny out to GL-4 this
last fall, using a couple quarts bought from TRF.)  If I had the
switch to do again, I would probably use the synthetic gear oil sold
by Redline -- they have separate formulations for trannies with 
brass components.    (BTW, mid-80s Volkswagens (Golf, GTI, Jetta, etc.)
have the same problems with brass transmission components.)
