With my '72 TR6, it's impossible to lift up on the shift lever.  As long 
as the clutch works, I've never had any trouble getting it into reverse.  
The choke knob does need to be twisted to stay out.  As someone 
mentioned, this is probably something that changed in '73 or '74.
