oil plug removal

I tried changing the oil in the TR 6 for the first time this weekend and
could not remove the oil plug. I quit trying to force it for fear of
rounding the head. The plug seems to be in good shape and there are several
threads showing outside the oil pan. Does anyone have a suggestion for
removing the plug? Is there anything I can do to avoid this problem when
reinstalling the plug?
