OK, I'm gonna catch Hell for this, but I run 90 WT gear oil in my levers!!
It started out as an experiment, and please... I'm not recommending it.
Frankly, the main reason I did it was because I was fitting old, presumable
worn out levers from a parts car and wanted to try to compensate for the
wear with thicker oil. Now, I know this'll probably cause these things to
leak prematurely, or something, but... why would that be any different?
They're SUPPOSED to leak, right? Everything else on my car leaks, so why
not the shocks, too!?? At any rate, it seems to work pretty well,
actually. I would not dump 90 WT in brand new levers, though. I must also
add, in my defense, that at the time (this was 8 years or so ago) I did not
have a marvelous resource like this list to submit questions to people who
know better. So, i had to try it out myself. They actually don't leak
much at all... In fact, the gooey coating that has built up on the shock
bodies is probably more from the differential spraying oil than from the
shocks.
I would love to hear the flames, though...
