Hi all,

Thought I would share my good news regarding the saga of my
transplantation of an A-type overdrive gearbox into my '71 TR6.

It all started a few months back when I saw an A-type box for sale on the
VTR small ads. I agreed to pay $750 and had the box shipped over. I was a
little disappointed to find that the gearbox had some problems - massive
amounts of swarf around the OD filter - most from a knackered layshaft
constant gear I think. Took the OD off the box which was a struggle job
and took it all apart. It seemed OK - I just swapped O-rings, also the
accumulator bore and piston were scored up badly from the metal bits. I
replaced the acc. bore and piston rings. Apart from that I just put it
back together. Oh - it had a broken thrust washer too.

I went for a rebuilt box sans OD from Rimmer Bros. Unfortunately the top
cover got broken by UPS en route :-(. Arranged to swap over top cover
from core gearbox for time being.

So, after ~5 hours Friday night mating O/D to gearbox etc. and another 12
hour bender on Saturday, test-drove around 11pm Sat. (sans gearbox
cover- 'loud'). (Plus dangerous - could easily get your hand into the
propshaft coupling) Anyway the transmission shifted OK ( a bit baulky into
2nd so far), the clutch felt fine, and the OD went 'in.' It should be
downhill from here.

All in all - I'll definitely enjoy having the lower engine speed for
cruising. Also, the clutch needed to be done. Had I known it was going
take as much time and money as it did (I bet I spent >$2k - I don't want to
think about it...) I would have held off I think... Perhaps this will be
interesting to anyone else considering on embarking on such a project.

THANK YOU to everyone who gave their insightful input through all stages
of this little adventure. Could hardly have done it without...

Triumphantly at last I guess,

Pete
