Jeff, 
You just discovered what you use to hook the engine hoist chain to for
'lifting' the engine out of the car.  There should be another one (which
you may be missing) at the front of the engine also.  As stated these are
provided for by the manufacturer for pulling an engine out of a car with an
engine hoist -
