A thousand apologies!  There's nothing worse than
telling a joke and blowing the setup.  And when you
do it in written form that's even worse.  Don't I
look dumb.  The line should have been:   

Steve Martin used to tell a joke about a his new
invention that was guaranteed to make him rich... a
lighter that ALWAYS stayed hot and never wore out.  

It was a tiny black vinyl car seat he kept in his
pocket.
